OVER the past few months, Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services in New Market Park has admitted and cared for patients as young as 11-years old. It is for this reason that funds raised at their Inaugural Golf Day on March 3 will go towards adding on an Adolescent Unit to the existing In-Patient Unit.
“Our unit currently has eight wards, two of which can cater for long term patients. However, we want to add on family rooms, in other words, wards which can cater for a family member to sleep over with his/her beloved one, especially in cases where the patients are very young,” says Tersia Burger, CEO of Stepping Stone Hospice.
“There comes a time when more intensive care is required and hospice involvement allows parents to remain parents and the guidance and care would come from hospice. We then find that parents of these young people would often stay with their child day and night, sleeping on a recliner chair in the room. I would like for the family rooms to be big enough to accommodate two beds, one for the patient and one for a family member wishing to stay over.“
“We have started the process by doing a cost estimation, and concluded that we are R532 000 short towards the total cost of adding on a further 250m² to our unit,” explains Tersia.
About the golf day:
Tersia believes that their golf day, to be hosted at Reading Country Club on Thursday, March 3, will make a serious dent in the shortage of funds. To show how determined she is for the golf day to be a success, Tersia undertakes to hit the first ball off the first tee on this auspicious occasion.
Format for the golf day is a Betterball Stableford, with some wonderful prizes up for grabs. Costs are R500 per player and it include green fees, halfway house and prize-giving dinner. Sponsorship of holes range from R2 000 to R5 000.
In supporting this golf day, you will make a big difference in the lives of families having to face the trauma of a life limiting illness. Kindly contact Marietjie Tame on 087 997 0222 or 082 337 5713 for booking and sponsorship details.
