WATCH: Alberton wins the Kevin de Klerk cup
Lifestyle Alberton Rugby Club retained the Kevin de Klerk Chairman Cup on Saturday by beating Union Rugby Club 32-15 at home.
This is the third time in a row the cup is retained by Alberton.
The day started early, with the junior sides of the two clubs facing off.
The Madalas were up next, with players over 35 years of age facing each other on the field. The third teams played after, which was a tough physical game, with Alberton winning the match 17-10.
The second teams’ match was stopped due to bad weather. When the match continued, however, it was one-way traffic. Alberton won the match comfortably with 25-10.
The last match of the day was that of the first teams. Union scored first, with a try being scored by Adolf Vosloo from a set-piece and the try was converted.
Union defence held Alberton at bay for most of the first half.
A lot of pressure and a red card for Wentzel Niemand of Union helped Alberton score their first try just before half-time, making the score 7-5 for Union.
Alberton was the first to score in the second half, giving them the lead for the first time, making the score 10-7.
A few minutes later, Union levelled the score with a penalty. A break from Alberton made the score 15-10 before the penalty gave Alberton an 18-10 lead.
Union hit back and scored, making the scores 18-15.
Union had more opportunity to score in the last few minutes, but Alberton made the most of their chances and a stolen ball and bad bounce gave Alberton their fourth try, making the score 25-18.
Alberton scored one last try when Thorn Khumalo scored a solo try, winning with 32-15.
