Alberton Wrestling Club duo off to North Africa
In a few weeks, local wrestlers Edward Lessing and Shaun de Kock will represent the country as they compete in a continental championship in northern Africa.
Alberton Wrestling Club’s Edward Lessing and Shaun de Kock will soon represent South Africa in a continental championship.
The pair will compete in Tunisia on May 14 in their respective weight classes in a continental championship.
This follows their triumph in a recent wrestling tournament, where they qualified for the championships.
The duo is no stranger to the world of wrestling. De Kock started the sport at the age of four, while Lessing started wrestling at nine years because he wanted to increase his chances of becoming a professional rugby player.
Lessing is one of the senior national wrestlers in the country with many accolades to his name.
He has won 14 South African championships and has represented South Africa in several countries. He has won over 200 medals and counting.
De Kock has also been on numerous tours and has won South African championships more than once.
“After this competition, my next goal is to compete in the Junior World Championships. I’m excited about this. It is a big opportunity for us. It would be great to win a gold medal at the competition,” he said.
De Kock will compete in the junior division and Lessing in the senior group.
“I’m now chasing the Olympic dream, and should I make it in the African Championships, I will stand a chance to compete in the Olympics. “I would like to thank God for this opportunity. Without Him, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve and become what I am today,” Lessing said.
The Alberton Wrestling Club congratulated the duo for this achievement.
