JHB South Hockey Club unites community with day of fun
Players and supporters from all age groups came together for JHB South Hockey Club's fun day, celebrating the club's growth and its mission to build a stronger community through sport.
JHB South Hockey Club recently brought together its players, parents, and supporters for a special Club Day at Waterstone College, celebrating community and the love of hockey.
The event was a huge success, with friendly matches and a day of fun for everyone. The club, founded in 2019 by Michael Richards and his wife, was created to fill a gap for hockey lovers in Johannesburg South.
“I wanted to have everyone together for a day of hockey fun,” shared Richards. “Sport is a good way of keeping the youth away from social problems that are an increasing issue in our communities, as well as an opportunity for older players to enjoy a few games and show the younger ones.”

The Club Day was a unique chance for members, who usually train and play matches at different times, to finally spend time together. It was a day dedicated to uplifting and uniting the community through sport.
The club has grown since its founding and now includes age categories from U5–11, U13, U15, and senior.
“We hope to continue growing as a club and we hope the community sees the positive impact sport can have, not only for physical health but also mental health,” Richards added. He also praised the coaches and thanked Konica Minolta South Africa and parents for their ongoing support.

Konica Minolta South Africa is a key sponsor, and their marketing manager, Ntombie Dlamini, explained their support: “We believe in the power of sport to uplift communities and inspire positive change. Our support for grassroots initiatives like JHB South Hockey Club is rooted in our commitment to youth development and community empowerment.
“By investing in local hockey programmes, we aim to create opportunities for young people to grow, learn teamwork, build confidence, and stay active. Sport is a powerful tool for social development, and through our sponsorship, we hope to help shape a brighter future for the next generation,” Dlamini shared.

Richards highlighted the ongoing need for positive outlets for the youth in the area. “We see so much talent and potential here, and our goal is to provide a safe, structured environment where they can not only develop their hockey skills but also learn valuable life lessons like teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.”
He hopes that by growing the club, they can create more opportunities and continue to combat social issues through the power of sport.

“Our dream is to make JHB South Hockey Club a cornerstone of the community, a place where everyone feels welcome and where we can truly make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of our players and their families.”
The day’s success highlighted the club’s positive role in the community and its commitment to using sport to make a difference.
