South Hills Boxing Club and SACAP host cannabis awareness and leadership workshop for youth

Young people in South Hills participated in vital workshop on cannabis awareness and leadership, organised by South Hills Boxing Club and SACAP

South Hills Boxing Club, in partnership with the South African College of Applied Psychology (SACAP), hosted a Cannabis Awareness Workshop at the South Rand Recreation Centre in South Hills recently.

The initiative brought together 42 young people from the community to engage in an interactive session focused on the impact of cannabis use from a young age. The workshop aimed to provide honest and accessible information to help youth make informed choices about their health and futures.

SACAP student counsellor Danielle de Jager covered both the short- and long-term effects of cannabis usage. Discussions highlighted how early use can negatively influence brain development, academic performance, and personal well-being, while also raising awareness about the potential long-term risks, including dependency and mental health challenges.

In July, SACAP student counsellor Dean Patricio facilitated an understanding leadership workshop, which explored what leadership means, the key traits of effective leaders, and how young people can begin developing their own leadership skills. The session empowered youth to recognise their potential to lead, influence, and inspire within their communities.

These workshops provide a safe space for participants to ask questions, share their views, and reflect on the role that informed decision-making plays in shaping a positive path forward.

South Hills Boxing Club, well known for its role in youth development and community upliftment, continues to use sport and education as tools to empower young people. By collaborating with SACAP, the club reinforced its commitment to not only keeping youth active and off the streets but also equipping them with knowledge to make responsible life choices.

These initiatives are an important step in addressing challenges faced by young people in the area by giving them the support they need to build brighter futures.
