Saturday Night Roller Derby skates into Mandeville Sports Club
Golden City Rollers moves away from Turffontein after 10 years.
Golden City Rollers is back on track and ready to welcome fans, friends, families, and future derby die-hards to their new home at Mandeville Sports Club in Bezuidenhout Valley for a special Saturday Night Roller Derby event on May 30.
After almost 10 years at União Portuguesa Hall in Turffontein, they have officially moved to Mandeville Sports Club, a venue with its own proud sporting legacy as the home of South Africa’s national wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby teams.
This move marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as we continue to grow roller derby in Johannesburg and build on our legacy as the highest-ranked roller derby league on the African continent.
Part housewarming, part warfare, part “hello again” after a quieter start to the year, their inaugural bout at Mandeville is all about warming their wheels, breaking in the track, and christening their new home in true Golden City Rollers style – with big hits, fleet feet, indomitable spirit, and an overwhelming love for the beautiful chaos of our sport.
The bout will be followed by a roller disco and open skate, so feel free to bring your wheely shoes of choice, inline skates and quads, both welcome. Unfortunately, gear rental will not be available; please bring your own.
The event will feature two teams made up of Golden City Rollers’ A-level skaters, many of whom represented Team South Africa at the 2025 Roller Derby World Cup. These skaters also formed part of the Charter (All-Star) Team that travelled to Cape Town in February for Africa’s first-ever Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA)-sanctioned bout, where Golden City Rollers went head-to-head with Cape Town Rollergirls, securing a historic 296-42 victory.
The former home in Turffontein hosted multiple home seasons and Saturday Night Roller Derby events, drawing crowds of more than 700. It was also where they hosted A-Fricken Good Time in 2020, the first and only Pan-African roller derby tournament in history.
Golden City Rollers skaters have long formed the backbone of Team South Africa Roller Derby, representing the country at the Roller Derby World Cups in 2014, 2018, and 2025. They’ve also competed internationally in the United States, Mexico, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany, and currently hold the highest international ranking ever achieved by an African roller derby team.
Roller derby is a fast, strategic, full-contact sport played on quad roller skates. Teams battle it out in high-speed, high-impact matches known as bouts, combining endurance, tactical blocking, explosive athleticism, and serious nerve.
Golden City Rollers games are known for huge hits, smart gameplay, and an electric atmosphere, making Saturday Night Roller Derby one of Johannesburg’s most unique live sporting experiences.
The Saturday Night Roller Derby event is your chance to see Golden City Rollers back in action, celebrate their new home, and witness the start of a new era for roller derby in Johannesburg.
Doors open at 17:00, the first whistle is at 17:30, and entry is R20 at the door. Secure parking, full bar, and restaurant on site. All ages welcome.
