The art of brandy making

Van Ryn’s 12 Year Old won the trophy for the second consecutive year.

AT the recently held 2016 International Wine and Spirits Competition – IWSA – which took place in London, the South African brands of Distell brought back home three trophies for the Best Worldwide Brandy, Best Cognac and Best Vodka.
Van Ryn’s 12-Year Old won the trophy for the second consecutive year since entering this prestigious competition the fifth time since 2004.
This not only confirmed that South African brandy’s are of high quality but also that distilling brandy in the country takes on an art of its own. The Van Ryn’s 12-Year Old is also lauded by the brandy loving purists as the best potstill brandy in the world.
According to Distell brandy ambassador Nick Holdcroft, it all lies in the art of brandy distillation.
“Production of brandy is strictly regulated in South Africa and our legislation allows for three different types of brandy; blended brandies, vintage brandies and potstill brandies, each with their own purpose and distinctive flavour profile.”
Holdcroft often holds workshops to spread the word and culture of distillation in order for people to understand and enjoy a product which is truly South African and has taken its rightful place in the world.
The Cape Wine Academy holds an ”Introduction to South African Brandy” course, which is open to the public, under the watchful eye of Holdcroft. The three-hour workshop imparts a deeper understanding of the subtleties of flavour and aroma found within the different styles of premium brandy.
“The time is ripe for South African brandies to achieve the recognition they deserve, and this Cape Wine Academy certified course is just the tonic we need. The exceptional quality and value of South Africa’s wines are no real secret, and there is no reason why our brandies should not enjoy the same recognition for their excellence, especially here in South Africa,” said Holdcroft.
The Introduction to South African Brandy course is run four times a year, in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Cape Wine Academy will also host special courses for groups on request.
