Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said government would be implementing laws to stop the sale of government subsidised houses. She said no one had the right to sell an RDP house. The house should be passed from one generation to another.

Government to introduce laws to restrict the sale of RDP houses

In her opening of the North West Human Settlement Indaba, Human Settlements Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, said when a person receives an RDP house, it was for the entire family and not for one person. “No one must sell the house. It must be passed from generation to generation,” she said.

The Minister said national government would introduce a centralised National Housing Needs Register (NHNR), which is a centralised database of all citizens who cannot afford to buy a house in the country.

“Currently we are processing all waiting lists from municipalities to ensure that we have a credible national centralised database. We want to ensure that there is credibility in the process of allocating houses,” the Minister said. She confirmed that she was working with every provincial MEC of Human Settlements to see to it that all contractors and material received their payment with 30 days.

“I have told my Director General that small contractors and small businesses must be prioritised at all times. If they do not have capacity to process the necessary documents, they must be assisted. We must pay our service providers within 30 days. They need the money to pay their workers,” the Minister added.

She visited the houses of mine workers built by Royal Bafokeng Platinum, were she said she was amazed by what had been delivered. “Our miners are staying in decent shelters. This is a good example of what partnerships between government, the private sector and communities can do,” the Minister said.
