WATCH: Brave youngster marks end of treatment by ringing the bell
It was a touching moment when brave Anika Koekemoer (6) cherished her milestone occasion of ringing the bell on October 26.
The paediatric oncology unit of the Netcare Clinton Hospital was filled with mixed emotions when the six-year-old got ready to ring the bell which marked the end of her treatment.
During the momentous event on October 26, the brave Anika Koekemoer was showered with gifts from Cupcakes of Hope as well as her doctor who found it hard to hold back her tears. The ringing of the bell mainly signifies the last time a patient would be visiting the centre for their treatment on their condition.
Anika was admitted to the hospital in 2019 after being diagnosed with bone cancer. The severity of her condition resulted in the amputation of her left leg.

Dr Tanya Schickerling described her as the bravest child and told the RECORD Anika had come to terms with her new self.
“She understood that unfortunately we had to cut her leg off in order to save her life, but it doesn’t just take anyone to do that. She is now playing and running with her friends as if nothing ever happened. I am really glad she is back at school,” she said.
Walter Kirsten, Anika’s father, said: “There will now be a lot of testing to make sure everything is still okay. We are thankful for people like Cupcakes of Hope who have assisted with sponsoring because this condition is very costly.”
