Local pastor’s book tackles questions about life and faith
Past Stephen Pohlmann (40) offers solutions on some of life’s challenging questions about life and faith through his newly published book.
In his book, The Reason for Everything, Past Stephen Pohlmann (40) aimed to offer solutions to some challenging questions about life and faith.
His newly published Christian book is written with both the religious and the non-religious person in mind.
Pohlmann, a father of two and married to Bianca, established Riverside Community Church in 2010.
He described himself as a food-geek who loves fishing, and has a rich musical history. He has played in everything from an orchestra, a rock band to a church worship band.
His post-graduate degrees in theology and geology have forged a passion to help people easily engage some of the complex matters of faith and life.
Mysteries
Pohlmann explored questions such as “Can God and science be friends?”, “Why is the world so messed up?” and “Can we trust the Bible?”.
“These questions can rise to the surface as one wrestles with tragedy or a conversation with a friend with different views which leaves you pondering. Sometimes even a movie or a book can cause one to think about these big questions about life and faith,” he said.
According to Pohlmann, it can be confusing to navigate various perspectives one would find on Google or YouTube or at varsity, especially the views of family and friends.
He said his easy-to-read book aims to explore these questions of life and faith from the perspective of the Christian worldview.
“It sets out to equip both the believer and the sceptic to deal with major challenges in Christianity. It even engages some of the issues of today with chapters on, “Why is the church filled with hypocrites?” and “How do sex and gender matter?”, said Pohlmann.
Past Richard van Lieshout of Rosebank Union Church reiterated that the book is a valuable reference for Bible teachers.
“This book is accessible enough for anyone exploring the Christian faith, and at the same time rich enough to satiate the serious thinker. It is an encouraging counsel for believers and a warm companion for those at the beginning of their journey of faith,” said van Lieshout.
Uniqueness
Pohlmann told the RECORD he wanted to write The Reason for Everything in such a way to make it accessible to anyone seeking to explore these questions.
“There are many books like this out there, but often people see these as ‘too intellectual’ and ‘difficult to read’. A major feature of this book is that I connect with my readers by illustrating my points with numerous real-life experiences and stories,” he said.
Commenting on his writing style, Send Relief director Greg Wilton said the book reads like a conversation with a trusted friend.
