Rape victim flees by jumping out of moving car

A BLUFF woman jumped from a moving vehicle after an evening of terror at the hands of a rapist.

On 17 August, three co-workers who were leaving work were offered a lift home by a man at the business’ gate. One of the co-workers, a 26-year-old woman, accepted. She gave him directions to her home, but realised she was in danger when the man drove straight past the house.

He took her to the end of Foreshore Drive, near some bushes and overpowered her by choking and then raping her. After the assault, he drove off with her, naked in the front passenger seat. When he passed her home a second time, she jumped out of the moving vehicle. The man chased after her, and repeatedly assaulted her. She managed to escape his grip by grabbing his groin and ran naked down the street, calling for help.

Although the man quickly fled the scene, he was identified via CCTV footage and witnesses in the informer network.

A 32-year-old was charged for rape, assault and robbery, for the theft of the victim’s mobile phone. He appeared in Durban Court on 21 August and was remanded into custody.
Brighton Beach detective branch’s Warrant Officer Marius Van Der Looy urges community members who have information on criminals or criminal activities in their policing areas to come forward and register as informers. Identities remain anonymous and if the information leads to an arrest or conviction, informants are paid an informer’s fee.

Brighton Beach SAP management thanks W/O Van Der Looy, the eye witnesses and informers network who played a vital role in the investigation, which led to the apprehension of the arrest.
