UK vet learns her trade at Crow

“I wanted to do charity work somewhere hot. A friend of mine who used to live in Yellowwood Park recommended Crow and since their work involved medical services, I thought it would help with my application for vet school,” said Katie. She admitted her parents were more excited about her visit than she was because she became nervous.

Katie has completed her ‘A’ levels which includes two years of scientific studies and hopes to be accepted at Sussex Downs College, where she will spend another five years studying towards becoming a vet. “I am fascinated by science and working with animals is great. I have enjoyed seeing different types of wildlife. Some animals I had never seen before and seeing the clinic staff treat the animals was very interesting.”

Katie managed to take some time out of work to enjoy horse riding in Amanzimtoti, visiting Hluhluwe Game Lodge and taking a canopy tour in the Midlands. Next time she visits the country, she wants to have a look at what Cape Town has to offer.

Crow communications and liaison officer, Paul Hoyte said: “Katie has been fun, down to earth and eager to learn. She is friendly, hardworking and always willing to do above and beyond what is required of her. It always helps to have volunteers who will be pursuing a career in a similar field, as they are always willing to do more. It is people like Katie who help shape our organisation into what it is today.”

Katie returns to the UK on Tuesday, 1 October.
