Flirting leads to hostel murder

A FLIRTATION led to the death of a 27-year-old man at the Jacobs Hostel on Saturday, 2 November.

The man was socialising with some friends at the hostel throughout the night and had allegedly flirted with another 22-year-old man’s female friend. An argument broke out between the two men, but they continued to socialise throughout the night into the early morning.

At about 9.30am, the 22-year-old followed him as he left the room. After returning he allegedly said he had ‘dealt with’ him, while holding a knife in his hand, then fled the apartment. The 27-year-old was found lying in the kitchen/lounge area with several stab wounds. Before he succumbed to his injuries, he named the 22-year-old as his attacker.

Brighton Beach SAP detectives investigating the incident followed a lead claiming the man had left the area by taxi heading in the direction of the city centre. A few hours later, they received a call from a 10111 operator, informing them that he had returned to Jacobs Hostel and handed himself over to the hostel dwellers.

Police arrested the man, who still had the murder weapon in his possession. He was charged with murder.
