City officials jailed for bribery

Municipal workers appear in court on charges of extortion.

Two municipal officials, aged 37 and 48, were arrested by the Durban Organised Crime Unit on charges of extortion for allegedly trying to bribe a Yellowwood Park resident.

It is alleged the resident’s electricity was cut-off due to an outstanding bill of R35,000. According to the resident, the municipal officers asked for R3,000 to reconnect his electricity and clear the debt. Montclair SAP were alerted about the workers’ misconduct.

A sting operation was set up, where the money would be exchanged. The Durban Organised Crime Unit swooped and arrested the officials after the exchange was completed.
The duo appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today, 17 April.
