Other international Goldman winners in 2014

The list of Goldman Environmental Prize winners from across the globe.

ALONG with South Durban’s Desmond D’Sa, this year’s international winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize are from India, Peru, Russia, Indonesia and USA.

D’Sa was selected as Africa’s recipient of the award for uniting South Durban residents to combat the Bulbul Drive landfill, leading to its eventual closure.

Ramesh Agrawal from India rallied locals to shut down one of the largest proposed coal mines in Chhattisgarh. Peru’s Ruth Buendia Mestoquiari worked with the Asháninka people to fight against the construction of dams that would have displaced indigenous communities.

The Russian recipient, Suren Gazaryan exposed government corruption and the illegal use of protected forestland alongside the Black Sea, near the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Rudi Putra from Indonesia worked to protect the endangered Sumatran rhino by eliminating illegal palm oil plantations, causing deforestation in northern Sumatra. The final recipient is Helen Holden Slottje from USA, who helped New Yorkers do battle with oil and gas companies by passing local bans on fracking.
