Police up patrols in face of burglary spike
Wentworth police urge home owners to be aware of housebreakers operating in the area.
WENTWORTH SAP has issued a warning about an increase in housebreaking incidents, specifically in Merebank.
Communications officer, Lieutenant Gumede, said the station had noted an alarming increase in housebreaking in residential areas, especially in the Rigde and Central areas in Merebank. The crimes are usually committed at about noon, when most people are at work and the thieves are usually on foot, though some make use of a vehicle.
“They target houses where they suspect nobody is home, deactivate alarm systems and break the window or door using force. Police are patrolling these areas during day and night and suspicious vehicles are searched,” said Lt Gumede.
He urges home owners to lock their homes before leaving, ensure alarm systems are activated and install CCTV cameras. People should take note of suspicious-looking vehicles, provide police with information on the make and registration number of the vehicle and a description of the occupants.
Emergency contact numbers should be easily accessible to family members and domestic workers at all times, including the following:
* Wentworth SAP: 031-451-6240, 031-451-6241 or 031-451-6242.
* Lt Gumede: 072-062-5182.
* Crime Stop hotline: 08600-10111.
