Public transport users ‘muvo’ over

More than 70,000 Muvo cards have been issued to date.

MORE than 70,000 eThekwini residents have ‘muved’ over to the new payment method for public transport, the Muvo Smart Card.

Replacing the old coupon system, the eThekwini Municipality began phasing in the Muvo card two years ago. “As with any change, there is a period of adjustment. We sincerely thank the commuters in Durban for their patience as we phased in the Muvo cards and for their willingness to take up the new system. Going forward we are all going to feel the positive effects of a more efficient, faster and safer public transport network,” said head of the eThekwini Transport Authority, Thami Manyathi.

The new system forms part of the integrated rapid public transport network (IRPTN), which aims to bring South African transport systems in line with world standards. The Muvo card can only be used on People Mover, Mynah and Durban Transport buses currently but will eventually be accepted on various other modes of public road transport.
