Hijackers receive eight years each
Woman chases hijackers and helps in detaining them.
FOUR men involved in a hijacking in Jagger Road, Montclair on Saturday, 31 May were convicted and sentenced to eight-years in prison in Durban Regional Court on Monday, 9 June.
According to the investigating officer, Montclair SAP’s W/O Roy Naidoo, the men hijacked an elderly man of his VW Sirocco. As they were speeding off, they bumped into a vehicle in Blamey Road. Not stopping for anything, they continued on their way. The driver, a correctional officer gave chase.
Hot on their heels, she chased them all the way to Jacobs, where the chase ended in Balfour Road, when the men crashed into a fence at Tiger Brands’ premises. One man was knocked unconscious while the other three attempted to flee on foot. It is alleged the woman knocked over the three men as they tried to flee.
Police arrived and arrested the assailants. The men, all aged 21, appeared in Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 June. Their bail applications were denied and they were remanded at Montclair police station for further investigation.
Due to the speedy conclusion of the investigation, they were tried on Monday, 9 June. They were found guilty and each received an eight-year sentence.
