Rapist gets life in prison
An Umlazi man was sentenced to life in prison for raping a teenager.

THE Umlazi Regional Court sentenced a 22-year-old man to life in prison on Friday, 4 July for the rape of a 15-year-old relative.
The young girl was asleep when her sister-in-law’s brother entered her bedroom and assaulted her. Despite her attempts to push him away, he overpowered her and raped her.
A case was opened at Umlazi police station and he was arrested on a charge of rape. The case was then investigated by the Umlazi Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, which was commended by provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni for an exemplary investigation that resulted in the conviction.
“The efforts of the SAP members have restored the community’s faith that such monsters will not get away with their evil deeds. We hope this sentence will prevent others who have intentions to take advantage of our young and innocent children,” she said.
