Robber slain in botched cash heist

Guard injured in shoot-out.

A BOTCHED cash in-transit heist left an armed robber dead and a security guard wounded at a garage in Leicester Road, Mobeni on Saturday, 12 July.

A Coin security guard who was carrying three money boxes was leaving the store when he was ambushed by three gun-wielding men, two of whom had pretended to be shoppers.

While waving their guns in his face, they demanded he drop the money boxes. One of his colleagues who saw the drama unfold opened fire on the assailants, who returned fired. The guard carrying the money ran for cover inside the shop while the gun-fight continued outside. One of the assailants was injured in a shower of bullets.

Fortunately for him, his friend dragged him into their getaway vehicle, a white VW Polo, where their driver was awaiting their return. The fourth assailant was abandoned by his cohorts and tried to flee on foot.

A chase ensued between him and the guard. Seeing his pursuer hot on his heels, the would-be robber fired shots at him.
Not hesitating, the guard fired back. In the cross-fire, the guard was shot in the thigh. The assailant also sustained a gun-shot wound and died at the scene.

His gun was seized by Montclair SAP, who are investigating.
