Task team nabs thief, seizes car

Both the man and the stolen vehicle were taken to Montclair police station, however, the case is being investigated by Verulam SAP.

MEMBERS of the provincial vehicle task team were instrumental in the arrest of a 29-year-old man for car theft on the N2 southbound near the M19 on Monday, 11 August.

The man, who is a known car thief, stole a silver grey Hilux at about 8.45am in Parkgate, Verulam. Its tracking device was immediately activated and the signal was triangulated to Waterloo in Verulam.

A few minutes later, the vehicle was spotted by officers on the N2 southbound, near Westwood Mall. A chase ensued and the man attempted to evade arrest. Seeing that police were hot on his heels, he abandoned the vehicle on the freeway and fled on foot. Relentlessly, the officers pursued the man and found him at Westwood Mall where he was detained. It is alleged he was en-route to Umlazi.

Both the man and the stolen vehicle were taken to Montclair police station, however, the case is being investigated by Verulam SAP.

The man will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 13 August.
