Two police officers were found dead at a granny flat on in Lancelot Road, Ocean View, Bluff.
Provincial police confirmed that on Sunday, 31 August at about midnight 32-year-old policewoman, Constable Lungiswa Mashalaba was allegedly shot and killed by another police, officer Sipho Zuma (48) who allegedly then turned the gun on himself.
On Tuesday, 2 September in reaction to the deaths, provincial MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu called for an investigation. Mchunu expressed concern at the killing of police officers in KwaZulu-Natal.
“This is very disturbing as it comes just weeks after we lost three other police officers in the province. We are very concerned at the growing trend in the province where police are being killed. As a society we need to ask ourselves serious questions about this disturbing trend where police are being targeted for murder. Police officers are a shield between defenceless communities and criminals and all needs to be done to ensure that they are appreciated and enjoy the support of communities,” said Mchunu.
It is unclear what led to the shootings. Brighton Beach police are investigating a case of murder. An inquest docket has been opened.
