Off-duty cop arrested in possession of stolen vehicle
Policeman arrested for car theft.
AFTER travelling through Jacobs in a stolen vehicle, an off-duty policeman was arrested on Friday, 16 January when he opened fire at a team of vehicle trackers.
About 2.10pm, the signal of a stolen vehicle was picked up in Jacobs. A team of trackers traced the signal and caught up with the car in Verulam.
When they approached the driver, he allegedly started shooting at them and they returned fire. The driver of the stolen car, a Toyota Hilux LDV, was shot twice in the shoulder, arrested by police and taken to hospital.
Investigations revealed him to be a 41-year-old Inanda tactical response team off-duty constable. “I am disappointed to hear of yet another member involved in criminal activity. We will ensure that detectives throw the book at him as soon as he is released from hospital. We will not tolerate police officers who are criminals themselves and you can be assured that disciplinary processes will be immediately initiated to get rid of him from the service,” said KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
His state firearm and the car were seized and he remains in hospital under police guard. He will be charged with attempted murder, pointing of a firearm and possession of property suspected to be stolen.
