“THE fact that the Bluff National Park Golf Club has been able to extricate itself from the financial bunker in which it had landed a year ago is a sterling achievement which needs to be applauded by Bluff residents,” said ward 66 councillor, Duncan Du Bois.
The heavy cloud of doubt over the fate of the golf course has been lifted, according to the local councillor, thanks to the efforts of members and volunteers.
“A year ago the parlous state of the club was cause for grave concern, not only for the continued wellbeing of the important green lung which it occupies, but also because of the possible consequences for property values in the surrounding area in the event that the club was abandoned as a result of bankruptcy.
But as a result of private initiatives and a heightened public awareness of the need to sustain and to maintain the Bluff’s green lung environment, it is gratifying to know there has been a significant turnaround in the club’s fortunes,” said Du Bois.
According to him, club captain Morne Pretorius, honorary life president, Darryl Ribbink and their dedicated membership should be applauded as the driving force behind the club’s improved financial position.
“Debts have been addressed and reduced. With clubs elsewhere finding themselves facing disbandment as a result of debt and falling membership, the Bluff National Park Golf Club’s recovery is a milestone which should remind us that such facilities and their role affects all of us and should not be taken for granted.”
