BLUFF paralegal from Legal Aid SA, Shanay Hollenbach was recognised for his outstanding performance when he represented KZN at the Legal Aid SA National Achiever Awards.
The glamorous event held in Johannesburg earlier this year saw Shanay awarded as first runner-up for Paralegal of the Year.
This was not the first award for the Bluff-based paralegal, as he was the ultimate winner in the provincial awards function held late last year. When he first started working at Legal Aid South Africa 10 years ago and became aware of the awards programme, he promised himself he would work hard to earn himself an accolade in recognition of his commitment to his work. “To receive the award for the best in KZN and to be the first runner-up nationwide feels surreal and it has always been a dream that I strived for. This is a door I have been knocking on for a long time, and I am truly honoured to have these awards bestowed upon me,” said Shanay.
Asked about the value this award has to him, he said: “It shows that hard work, dedication, long hours and always striving to provide your best does pay off. People might not always note the effort you invest in your work, but as I always say, like cream your hard work will rise to the top and distinguish you from mediocre effort”.
Legal Aid SA Durban head of office’s Nomsa Nkosi, said: “Shanay consults with about 100 to 120 clients per week. He is very dedicated in all his dealings with clients, fellow colleagues as well as stakeholders. Despite being a full-time student, and employed full time, Shanay always strikes a balance between his studies and his duties at Legal Aid SA, even if this means he must work over weekends and public holidays. His knowledge of many aspects of the law enables him to provide accurate legal advice to clients.
The Achiever Awards is an annual Legal Aid SA event which recognises and celebrates their star performers who contribute to its success. Legal Aid SA provides professional legal advice and representation to those who can’t afford it and in the past financial year 2017/18, they provided legal advice and assistance in 731,856 matters.
