Ward 66 vulnerable groups and gender committee appeals to public for food boxes

THE ward 66 Vulnerable Groups and Gender Committee have embarked on a project to assist various feeding schemes across the ward and appeal to local businesses to provide support on an ongoing basis with the donation of non-perishable food items to support the most vulnerable residents on the Bluff.

According to ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo the feeding scheme has in recent years managed to support up to 38 vulnerable households every month within the community. This number increases every month as families struggle to make ends meet and support their family with basic food items.

“This task is not lacking in assistance from volunteers, nor is it a difficult task to get the food to the needy, but the consistency of donations of said food items wafts and wains. Collection boxes have worked well for specific food drives in public places in the past. The ongoing need for families to receive a monthly food parcel of very basic items of non-perishable foods is paramount to the committee. Families with children and the elderly are considered first. The committee seeks to be a hand that helps the needy in our community,” said Prinsloo.

Members and volunteers under the supervision of Zoe Moore who chairs the ward 66 committee’s vulnerable group and gender sub-committee, requests for local food outlets to establish a collection box at the entrance or exit of their store which will be manned and monitored by them.
