Learn about bees at the next garden club meeting

Visitors and new members are welcome to join the club.

After opening the meeting of the garden club, held on Monday, 1 July, with a prayer, the club’s president, Karolina Kotze welcomed members present and visitors Colette Stoffels and Lily Clouston to the meeting.

Prayers and well wishes are with sick members for a speedy recovery. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted and signed as correct. Lynne Gillman, the treasurer gave the finance report. Jeanne Buitendag, Lynne Gillman and June Richards were congratulated for their birthdays in June. Yusimi Zayas was thanked for donating the lovely prizes. The door prize was won by Shirley Shaw, raffle by Mavis Dunn and the 100 club was won by Shirley Shaw. Congratulations to Yusimi Zayas and Monica Auguste for gaining 200 points and each receiving a gift for their accomplishments.

Alma Botha enlightened members on uses and benefits of the avocado pear leaf. Karolina also spoke on the mother in law’s tongue plant (elephant’s tooth) and the sorrel plant. Margaret Everett said it was gratifying to see interesting and lovely pot plants on the competition table. She gave advice that the specified 15cm height of the floral arrangement starts from the table to the top of the arrangement. The speaker for the July meeting will be Gavin Dawson who will talk on bees. New members and visitors are welcome. Come along and enjoy an informative and interesting morning with the club. The meeting starts at 9.30am to about 11am at the Pigeon Club in Tara Road.

Visitors and new members are welcome to join the club. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month. For more information, contact the secretary on 031-461-3038.

From my garden: Beryl Povall, Yusimi Zayas, Lynne Gillman, Monica Auguste, Karolina Kotze (10), Lettie van Jaarsveld (nine). Best pot plant: Yusimi Zayas, Karolina Kotze, Noel Povall, Beryl Povall (10), Mavis Dunn (nine).
