Meals drive to provide sustenance for impoverished Bluff families

Volunteers will be needed to collect and distribute prepared meals

IMPOVERISHED families living in the Bluff community have reason to celebrate as the ward 66 vulnerable groups and gender committee successfully secured a feeding scheme.

“Due to the massive demand and lack of food security within our community, the committee has decided to launch the Bluff Loves Meals Feeding Scheme to meet this demand. The scheme aims to deliver hot meals to families five days a week with an additional weekend meal. This will ensure that a healthy balance of cooked meals are delivered to the most vulnerable people within our community,” said ward 66 councillor, JP Prinsloo.
He said his ward was inundated with requests for food parcels from impoverished families in the past year and added that providing enough food for these families had been quite the challenge considering the current economic environment.

“We have always endeavoured to supply enough food for people to substitute whatever they can afford. We are working hand-in-hand with other outreach groups that provide daily soup kitchens and sandwich schemes to the Bluff community. For this scheme to be successful we will require the support and assistance of the entire community. This can be in the form of donating perishable food used for the meals or delivering hot meals to families supported by the scheme,” he said.

Volunteers will be needed to collect and distribute prepared meals to the families supported in ward 66 six days a week. Collections and drop-offs will be delegated to ensure that each volunteer does it once a week.

“We are asking volunteers for a three-month commitment which translates into 12 trips of dropping off food over the period. If you are aware of any families or children who are in desperate need for this type of support, send their details to the committee.”

Donation boxes can be found at the Spar on Bluff Road and the Kwikspar on Marine Drive. The kinds of perishables accepted for donation are listed on the boxes. Food can also be dropped off at the ward councillor’s office at 49 Old Mission Road, Monday to Friday between 8:30am and 2:30pm.
