Bluff mayoral outreach to spearhead service delivery
EThekwini Municipality mayor, cllr Mxolisi Kaunda, is said to embark on a mayoral outreach to the Bluff, to inspect service delivery projects and socio-economic challenges faced by the community.
THE mandate of the municipal war room is to promote the best possible service delivery and escalate issues to provincial and national government, and ward 66 war room chairperson, Charles Leaven together with his team are getting the ball rolling through the Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) programme.
EThekwini Municipality mayor, cllr Mxolisi Kaunda, is said to embark on a mayoral outreach to the Bluff, to inspect service delivery projects and socio-economic challenges faced by the community as highlighted by the ward 66 war room. OSS is aimed at gaining insight on service delivery challenges, government programmes and projects that have meaningful impact on communities, as well as how government can work together with various stakeholders in improving service delivery and driving the development agenda of the Metro.
According to Charles, the objective of the outreach, scheduled for Friday, 13 December is aimed at bringing government closer to the people, whereby the City interacts with the Bluff community regarding upcoming projects and progress on existing ones.
“Issues discussed and tabled during our war room meetings will be escalated to the mayor or his representatives for his attention. Together with his team, they will come down to touch base and see what is happening in the community. The main purpose of this initiative is to show the successes, failures, challenges, areas and departments in need of improvements and developments in the ward,” he said.
Part of the day’s itinerary includes a drive though along the ward’s informal settlements, problem buildings, unrepaired houses damaged during the 2017 storm as well as areas with inadequate infrastructure. This will be followed by a formal sit-down meeting with mayor and his team to discuss a way forward in addressing issues of concern, including those of illegal trucking, health and safety.
“There are a lot of plans to upgrade the area while creating jobs for the people within our community. Recently being recognised as an international whale heritage site by the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA), through our community tourism organisation, Sodurba is one of our greatest accomplishments this year. However, we need our infrastructure and community to match that world class expectation. The Bluff has a lot to offer and I’m aware of the challenges that our community faces and I see it as my duty to deal with these issues for the Bluff’s overall success,” said a determined Charles.
