ATHLETES put their fitness and endurance to the test as they laced up their trainers for the Karkloof 100 and 50 miler marathons which commenced at the Karkloof Country Club on Saturday, September 25.
The race incorporates international best practices from established, world-famous trail runners while adding its own uniquely South African flavour.
One of the who many looked forward to chase the clock and reach the finish line, was Bluff Athletic Club avid runner, Ignatius Gorejena who took on the 50 miler (80km) and admitted that trail running was a completely different ball game.
“It was a new experience but it was worth it as a novice. It was fun on the day to explore the nature and scenery out there. KarKloof gave me a new dimension in terms of approaching running, it was like a horror movie at some point. But the experience was the best thing to do. My position overall was 7th with a finishing time of 9 hours 14 minutes. I believe in myself and have a new found confidence. I will definitely be back next year,” said the 42-year-old.
