Detective secures 12-year conviction

WENTWORTH police management has commended the sterling work done by Sergeant Bhekinkosi Manqoba Zulu for successfully securing a conviction.

Zulu was assigned to a case of murder after a victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital following a drive-by shooting that took place on Jonas Road on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at about 20:50.

According to the station’s spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede, the victim, aged 62, was standing outside the flats when gunshots went off in his direction.

“The victim ran, but was shot and he fell. He was rushed to Wentworth Hospital, but due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was transferred to King Edward Hospital and he succumbed to his injuries the next day. Before he died, he was able to tell detectives who had fired the shots,” said Gumede.

Lynden Patrick Jones, 18, was arrested by the detectives at the corner of Woodville Road in Wentworth and detained for murder on Monday, February 25, 2019.

Zulu pressed on with the case, working tirelessly to collect witness statements and ensuring that the case docket was ready for the court trial. He also ensured that witnesses were summoned and attended court.

“The accused appeared in several court trials and Zulu had opposed bail for the release of the accused since it was a serious case. Jones was convicted at Regional Court Z for murder. He was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

“The investigating officer was commended for ensuring that the accused is brought to book, charged, ensuring that bail was opposed and that the case was finalised successfully. The station’s management commended this member for a job well done,” Gumede added.
