Bridging the gap: Coedmore Bridge acquires new subcontractors
Coedmore Bridge is starting to take shape as new subcontractors have come on board and are currently working onsite.
CONSTRUCTION of the new Coedmore Bridge in Yellowwood Park is underway, with work on the R48 million project having recently resumed. It’s one of many large-scale infrastructure projects by eThekwini Municipality, aimed at improving the quality of life for residents within the area and offering easy access to nearby suburbs.

The SUN has learnt that a new subcontractor is currently on site resuming construction work of the bridge. Afrostructures is now handling the whole project on behalf of Leek Construction cc, the company which was awarded the original tender by the eThekwini Municipality.
Ward 64 councillor, Gavin Hegter said, “Leek Construction is still the principal contractor. They have subcontracted the entire balance of the project to Afrostructures. The completion date is still set for February 2025.”
The original bridge was washed away by the floods of 2022 and is now under reconstruction, courtesy of the National Treasury’s Municipal Disaster Response Grant. Once completed, the 90-meter bridge will have two lanes as well as pedestrian walkways. eThekwini Municipality said earlier that the project also involved the construction of a 150-meter access road, traffic-calming measures and improved surface drainage systems.
In September, the SUN contacted eThekwini Municipality to confirm whether a new contractor had been appointed.
Spokesperson for eThekwini Municipality, Gugu Sisilana stated at the time that the original contract remained with Leek Construction cc and that the budget for the project had not changed.
The construction has forced motorists to find alternative ways, at times adding an extra 45 minutes to their trip. Attempts at comments from Afrostructures, eThekwini Municipality, and Leek Construction cc were unsuccessful at the time of publishing.
