Truck crashes into pedestrian bridge, causing it to collapse

A truck carrying an abnormal load crashed into a pedestrian bridge in Merebank, causing the bridge to collapse.

CHAOS erupted on Himalayas Road in Merebank this afternoon (January 10) after a pedestrian bridge partially collapsed when a truck carrying an abnormal load crashed into the structure. No injuries were reported.

PT Alarms Tactical Response units, K9 unit and Armed Response, among other emergency responders, quickly arrived at the scene to secure it.

Dhevan Govindasamy, spokesperson for PT Alarms, said, “The accident happened when the truck carrying the heavy-duty hyster forklift miscalculated the height clearance of the pedestrian bridge. Upon impact, a large section of the bridge collapsed onto the southbound lane of travel.”
