THE KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that its recent rabies vaccination campaign in Durban South from July 20 to 24 exceeded its goal.

The veterinary services directorate organised the initiative across several communities, including Merebank, Austerville and The Bluff.

Number vaccinated

During the campaign, residents were invited to bring their dogs and cats for free rabies vaccinations. In total, 1 051 pets received vaccinations, comprising 966 dogs and 85 cats. 

Queen Duma, an animal health technician with the Veterinary Services Directorate, expressed gratitude for the community’s participation. 

“We set a target of 1 000 pets, considering that other organisations also offer free rabies vaccinations in the area. Despite this, the campaign exceeded the goal,” she said.

Over a period of four days, mobile vaccination teams operated at various community locations, providing free vaccinations for dogs and cats. This effort was part of the department’s broader strategy to increase awareness about rabies and mitigate the transmission of the virus, which poses a risk to both animals and humans.
