THE South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 Weather warning for damaging winds and waves for Monday, August 10 in eThekwini.

The Level 4 warning is valid from midnight until late evening on Monday.

An intense cold front is expected to bring strong winds, with significant wave heights of up to 6m along the KZN coastline.

eThekwini is anticipated to be among the most affected areas.

According to eThekwini Municipality, a Level 2 warning for disruptive rain is in effect from this evening and may cause localised flooding in susceptible formal and informal settlements, on roads, in low-lying areas and at bridges.

Spokesperson for eThekwini Municipality Senzelwe Mzila said, “The most likely impacts are damage to coastal infrastructure and a build-up of sand on coastal routes, fallen trees and wind-blown debris, and interruptions to electricity supply.”

Small harbours and ports may experience temporary disruptions.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution, particularly on coastal roads, bridges and exposed routes, where strong winds, rainfall, reduced visibility and fallen trees may create hazardous driving conditions.

Motorists should not attempt to drive through flooded roads, causeways or low-lying bridges.

Residents are encouraged to remain indoors where possible, secure loose outdoor objects and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of strong winds and heavy rain.

Beachgoers, anglers, recreational boat users and the public are strongly urged to stay away from beaches, coastal rocks, piers and other shoreline areas, as hazardous sea conditions are expected along the coastline.

Mariners, fishermen and operators of small to medium-sized vessels are advised not to venture into the open sea and to seek safe harbour until conditions improve.

The municipality’s disaster management and emergency services teams are on high alert and remain fully mobilised to respond to any weather-related incidents.

Multi-disciplinary teams are on standby to clear fallen trees, debris and blocked stormwater infrastructure, and to assist affected communities.

The municipality will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely communication to ensure public safety.
