THE Bluff’s Gabriella Theunissen discovered dance not just as a way to perform, but as its own language. Through movement, she could express feelings, tell stories and find her own voice. Now, at 21, she’s bringing that lifelong passion to the stage in “Shall We Dance,” a show that celebrates all forms of dance, creativity and storytelling, bringing together performers from different styles.

For Gabriella, this is a chance to show the hard work, art and passion that have been part of her life since she was very young.

Seeing the spark for the first time 

Her dance journey started when she was just two and a half years old. She would watch her older sisters in their dance classes. “I could never sit still while they danced, so I eventually started taking classes myself,” she said.

What began as childhood curiosity grew into a deep love for dance. Over the years, she danced at various studios, honing her technique and realising how powerfully dance could narrate and tell a story.

Deep love for the arts 

Her connection to performing arts grew even more when she was around 16.

“I was introduced not only to performing but also to assistant teaching. That experience gave me a whole new appreciation for dance and inspired me to continue growing both as a dancer and as a mentor,” she said. 

Today, Gabriella is trained in ballet and modern theatre, and she also practises contemporary, jazz and tap. While she appreciates what each style offers, contemporary dance holds a special place for her.

“I love it because of the freedom and emotion it allows you to express,” she said.

This freedom is what keeps her dancing. Having spent most of her life moving to music, dance is now an inseparable part of who she is. She says she’s never known a life without it.

Taking the Shall We Dance stage

As Shall We Dance approaches, rehearsals are a mix of excitement, anticipation and a few nerves. But for Gabriella, the experience is as much about connecting with others and growing as it is about perfecting the steps.

“It is so special to work alongside dancers who are just as passionate and committed to giving their best. Learning new choreography, growing together as a team and supporting one another throughout the process has made rehearsals an enjoyable and memorable experience. It’s always a privilege to be part of a production like this,” she said.
