How to opt out of spam calls
The opt out registry was created to allow citizens to exercise their right to privacy from unsolicited marketing calls.
TELEMARKETERS might find themselves in hot water as the National Consumer Commission prepares to roll out its opt out registry. The new system was created to help South Africans that are continuously bombarded with spam calls throughout the day.

What is the opt out registry?
According to the National Consumer Commission the opt out registry ensures your address, email address, telephone and cell number are no longer available to organisations, who want to make offers and send information that you do not wish to receive.
“The system will allow consumers who have registered pre-emptive blocks with the National Consumer Commission to block unwanted direct marketing communication aimed at them,” said the National Consumer Commission.
Hefty fines for non-compliance
The amendment to Consumer Protection Act was gazetted on April 15. According to the act, non-compliant businesses could face fines of up to R1m or 10% of annual turnover, whichever amount is higher.
How to register?
In order to register consumers should have a valid email address and ID number.
- Upon registration, consumers receive an email notification confirming their registration.
- An agent from the National Consumer Commission will verify the information provided during registration before approving a profile.
- Once activated, the consumer receives another email notification with username and password.
- Consumers can log in and register their pre-emptive block (what is known as opting-out).
- Consumers can modify their information as and when there is a need.
- Consumers can amend their pre-emptive block options anytime.
- Every amendment will be effective 30 days from the date on which it was registered.
Non-South African residents can also register. If you do not have an email address you can contact the commission’s contact centre (012 065 1940) and create a profile.
