The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) hosted a meeting at the Makola Primary School in Central Western Jabavu recently.
Present were sector five residents and ward committee members, who discussed the launch of SANCO in Ward 35, schools in the area and other general problems in this ward.
Residents asked for SANCO to be launched in this ward and it was agreed that this would be done in November.
SANCO also spoke about some initiatives that they have introduced to better conditions in this ward, including making sure that school pupils in uniform are not on the streets after 8am and patrolling the area, and confiscating hats and things pupils should not wear at school.
SANCO said for now they are dealing with Tlhatlogang Junior Secondary School then later they will move onto other schools.
They have also decided to take action and fight the issue of nyaope smokers in the area.
The SANCO Interim chairperson, Mandla Tlhagale, said: “We decided that we would personally move the boys who smoke drugs in the area ourselves as they are causing problems in the community.
“We also want our children to know that they are nothing without education.
“People also think they can do anything in this ward, so we want to put a stop to this mentality.”
Tlhagale said they are also assisting in a case of a child who was almost raped by her stepfather and they want to spread the message that uncles and stepfathers should protect their children instead of abusing them.
Anyone who needs help from SANCO can contact 073 354 4154 or leave a message and they will be told where to go for further assistance.
