Motorists warned about bad driving during festive season

"The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has warned motorists to be cautious on the roads as the festive season heading away".

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said motorists must obey the roads rules or they will be fined or get arrested depending on their charges.

“There will also be road blocks over the festive season in order to prevent accidents from happening.

“Pedestrians must also be vigilant while using the roads and pavement ways,” he said.

Minnaar said drinking and driving is one of the biggest threats to Road Safety in South Africa. “Research indicates that 50 percant of people who die on the roads have a blood alcohol concentration above 0.05 gram per 100 millilitres.

“Law enforcement agencies continue to crackdown on these dangerous offenders.

“Motorists become surprised when they find out the penalties for drinking and driving.

“Due to the efforts of groups like Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), hundreds of new DUI laws have been passed nationwide since 1980,” he said.
