Cooking finals at Emndeni Skills Centre
Culinary students do their best to impress judges at Emndeni Skills Centre.
The Emndeni Skills Development centre hosted a final catering assessment for their cooking and catering class last week Friday.
The event was graced by professional chefs who were assessing the final products the students made.
The criteria for rating the dishes was based on an individuals’ ability to balance different kinds of flavours, ability to fuse ingredients well and the creativity to present a decent and good looking dish.
Lesego Buthelezi is a professional chef and said that the results of the day show a lot of talent but says the students could do better.
“The classes began in January this year with the course finishing in March and we were impressed with the standard presented by the students, but I really feel there is plenty room for improvement.
Sandile Khulu is a facilitator at the centre and says that the class of 2014 have out done themselves this year.
“We haven’t had a class producing such quality in such a short space of time, they have definitely raised the bar and the next class have a really high standard to live up to,” Khulu said.
Although Khulu doesn’t have cooking expertise but he was impressed and so was Constance Bodiba, who is a finalist at the assessment.
“My best performance was in the biscuits, I think I really did well and the judges didn’t say anything negative so I’m confident I’ve got this covered,” Bodiba said.
Khulu says the students are well prepared for the world of work and he appeals to the business community to open up doors for the young skilful individuals.
