The Gauteng provincial government says it plans to hand over more houses in Johannesburg as part of its long-term efforts to address the housing backlog and eradicate informal settlements.

Gauteng MEC for Informal Settlements Tasneem Motara said several housing projects are currently being developed in different parts of the City of Johannesburg.

According to Motara, the projects form part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to improve living conditions, eradicate informal settlements and restore dignity to residents.

She said Gauteng would remain a major focus for housing development, with the province expected to deliver the largest number of houses as part of government’s plans.

Despite challenges affecting some projects, Motara said several developments had already been completed, while government continues working towards delivering more homes to residents.

The housing programme also aims to address the backlog of residents who applied for government housing between 1996 and 1999.

Motara said a major housing development is planned for Lefhureng, with the project expected to prioritise residents from Soweto.

She said the provincial government would continue working with municipalities to accelerate housing delivery and reduce the number of people living in informal settlements
