Social Development MEC visits Nancefield Hostel

Mazibuko takes service delivery to hostels.

The Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko visited Nacefield Hostel on Tuesday.

The visit was part of the department’s service delivery programme.

Residents got a chance to talk to the MEC about matters which troubles them in the hostel.

Mazibuko and her entourage did a house to house visit where people shared their stories and asked for help from the department.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Community Development, Department Of Labour and Home Affairs were part of the event.

Hostel dwellers and residents from surrounding areas were given a chance to interact with social workers and got their questions answered by them.

Unemployed residents were encouraged to bring their CVs for registration on the labour department’s database.

Speaking at the event Mazibuko said as government they are on a mission to create integrated communities.

“Gone are the days when hostels were overlooked when it came to service delivery,” said Mazibuko.

She said this is part of the Jozi@Work programme which is meant to benefit everyone in the province including hostel communities.

The MEC ended the event by handing out food parcels to struggling families.

She however, stressed the importance of skills transfer which will ensure that people can sustain themselves and not depend on government for food parcels in the long term.
