The march was aimed at addressing police brutality against pupils, safety and corruption that takes place in schools in Naledi, Zola, Emndeni, Snake Park, Tladi, Moletsane and Phiri.
Other issues cited in the memorandum include drugs made easily available at schools, residents having easy access into schools, pupils having to pass dangerous areas that are not patrolled on their way to and from school and non experienced security personnel guarding schools.
“These issues have been brought to the attention of police more than two months ago and we still haven’t gotten a response or seen anything done about these issues, that’s why the congress has decided to take action and bring these issues to immediate attention.
“The police have accepted the memorandum and asked to be given a week to respond to the issues, if nothing is done on the time we agreed on, then we promise that Johannesburg will be ungovernable until these issues are dealt with,” said Tebogo Magafane, region D chairperson of COSAS.
