Tshebedisano Primary School in Pimville, Soweto hosted their market day on September 04. The day aimed to help Grade Seven learners put theory into practice.

Learners got an opportunity to sell goods to both learners and educators; they also hosted activities such as video games and physical activities in exchange for money.

“The day formed part of their school curriculum for Economic Management Sciences (EMS) and goes towards their marks for term 3.”

“The learners must understand how to plan and manage a business at a young age,” Said EMS educator, Noluthando Radebe.

With the unemployment rate rising rapidly, especially among the youth, EMS has become more imperative for learners, as it teaches financial literacy that can be applied in real life.

Radebe shared that Market Day teaches children collaborative work and problem-solving skills.

The principal of the school, Mandla Mlotywa, said: “I am very proud of our learners for the success of our Market Day.”

“Their creativity and hard work were truly inspiring.”

“This was an important initiative as it taught learners about entrepreneurship, financial literacy and teamwork beyond the classroom.”

“I hope our learners have gained confidence and practical skills to become future business leaders,” he concluded.

 

Stalls were sold to learners for R30 to help buy paper and ink for the printer and support the running of the school. All profit made by the learners was for them.

Entrepreneurship creates employment and is pivotal, so it should be practised from a young age, such as in primary school.
