Fire breaks out at Helen Joseph Hospital

No injuries were reported as Emergency Services distinguished the fire quickly.

On Sunday morning a fire broke out at the Helen Joseph Hospital cleaning department storeroom.

According to the spokesperson for the department of health, Steve Mabona, no injuries were reported.

“Johannesburg Emergency Fire Department was called in to help and control the fire.

“The quick reaction from them resulted in no injuries being reported,” said Mabona.

The fire however, has contributed to some of the hospital’s telephone lines and building lights not working.

Jack Bloom who is the DA Shadow MEC of Health has expressed his concerns over fire prevention at hospitals in Gauteng.

“We may not be so lucky to have no injuries next time.

“Many hospital buildings are sorely in need of maintenance and repair that would assist in fire prevention thus a fire inspection audit should be done at all Gauteng hospitals to ensure that fire controls are adequate,” said Bloom.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
