ICT to be introduced to other grades

Schools in Gauteng to go paperless by 2018.

Chief of Staff at office of the MEC for Education in Gauteng, Oupa Bodibe said the introduction of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in schools is a game changer.

Bodibe said ICT creates an opportunity for educators to introduce new teaching methods.

“Most importantly, it has given pupils a better understanding of concepts and abstracts. Internet connectivity and access to educational sites enhancing the ability of pupils to conduct research,” he said.

When responding to whether ICT is effective enough towards meeting set goals of seeing pass rate improve and pupils passing convincingly, Bodibe said it is still early to arrive at this determination given the fact that the system is fairly new.

“But there is improvement on the time that teachers and pupils spend in class doing their work.

“ICT has also brought some excitement, innovation and interest,” he said.

Bodibe said GDE intends to rollout ICT to Grade 11 this year and ending with Grades Seven and Eight in 2018.

He confirmed that most of the tablets have been returned and a few have been reported stolen and damaged.
