Mystery departure of Bara Hospital CEO

No permanent head at South Africa's biggest hospital.

Mystery surrounds the departure of Dr Sandile Mfenyana, the CEO of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, since the beginning of this year.

Democratic Alliances (DA) Gauteng Shadow for Health Jack Bloom said, “No reason has been given for his transfer to the head office of the Gauteng Health Department.

“Staff at the hospital are in the dark about his absence and replacement by an acting CEO.

“Speculation is that he has incurred the displeasure of Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu.
“Mfenyana was appointed by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi to head the hospital in February 2013.”

“It is of great concern that our largest hospital is currently without a permanent head.

“The Gauteng Health Department should give reasons for Mfenyana’s removal and move quickly to appoint a competent chief who can fix the myriad problems at this hospital,” said Bloom.
