Police receive tip offs on the Westbury Shootouts

Perpetrators suspected of shootings arrested at Sophiatown Police Station.

A report from Lt Col Julia Claassen Corporate Communication Officer at the Sophiatown Police Station has stated that the police have had some successes over the past week.

An intelligent driven operation regarding the spate of shootings that occurred in the Westbury area that was conducted from the period of August 28 has healed the following results:

  • On the August 28, an integrated intelligent driven operation was conducted after a shooting occurred on the August 27 where two victims were shot and injured.

Information led the police to the Belinda Flats in Westbury, where a witness pointed out the 24-year-old suspected perpetrator Mr. Stevensons.

The police also confiscated two toy guns in the process.

He was arrested on charges of attempted murder and appeared in court on the August 31 at the Newclare Magistrate Court and again on the September 6 for a bail application.

However, his bail application was not successful and he will remain in custody.

  • During the second operation on the September 2, the police were led to a flat in Westbury where they arrested a 32-year-old Mr. Muller.

They also confiscated a 4.5 Llama pistol with a magazine containing seven (7) live rounds with the serial number filed off.

He was implicated in a shooting that occurred on the August 9 where two victims were shot and wounded.

He appeared on September 5 at the Newlands Magistrate Court on charges of attempted murder and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The case has been reprimanded to the September 13 for a formal bail application the Johannesburg Magistrate Court but however, he will remain in custody.

Last night a fleet of K9 unit and EMPD vehicles were patrolling and doing random searches in the Westside community.

The South African Police Service management thanked the Sophiatown community for their tangible information provided to effect these arrests.

“The community is also encouraged to report corruption to the Provincial Anti-Corruption hotline at 086 026 778 78,” said Claassen.
