The life of a police officer with Constable Mzwakhe Xazi

Former Dobsonville Police Station spokesperson talks to us about his journey as a police officer.

A police officer’s work entails drama, daily exposure to physical danger, enforcing law and order and ultimately creating social cohesion which would result in peace and harmony in society.

Constable Mzwakhe Xazi subscribes to the latter category, and his job demands that he put his body on the line to attain his objective.

“Our unit falls under the Police Visibility Unit.

“We host projects against crime where we work with Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Youth Crime Prevention Desk.

“Our objective is to address roots causes of crime in the community by participating in endeavours to fight crime,” said Xazi.

He said there are great strides being made by his unit. He said they are instrumental in bridging the gap between the police and community.

“We have a dedicated school safety programme which educates learners about the dangers of crime.

“Trust has already grown between the public and the police as they now easily volunteer information about the criminal activities taking place in their respective residential areas.

“The unit also helps to establish trust between the police and the public,” said Xazi.

Constable Xazi started working with the police from 2002 -2009 as a clerk at the Orlando Police Station.

In 2004 he was relocated to Dobsonville Police Station to work as a clerk and he then served as a police reservist from 2004 – 2009.

“I also served as a Youth Desk chairperson from 2005-2009 in Dobsonville and later served as a chairperson of the Greater Soweto Area Youth Desk in 2006.

“I officially joined the police force in 2010,” said Xazi.

Despite horrible experiences encountered by police daily such as police killing, numerous threats, and crime, Xazi remains committed to the oath he took when joining the police force.

It has been a driving force throughout his demanding career.
