“I am an EcoScout” – a programme that saves the world
EnvironMentorz's holiday programme
When you are young, it is always easier to be groomed into things that you might enjoy later in life.
For instance, thinking of being a wrestler comes from all the times that you watched Wrestling or if you wanted to be a dancer because you watched “Step-Up” or “Take the lead” for the first time.
For some people these dreams or fantasies actually work out, but for others not so much.
When you instil great values into the lives of the children that you are raising they will grow up with these values and it will become a part of who they are.
EnvironMentorz has come up with a way to instil a value that cares for the environment or to be environmentally-friendly. This type of value hardly exists among children.
Children aren’t aware that trees and other plants are actually living organisms and by the time they hear or learn about it in Biology, it’s already too late.
EnvironMentorz and the University of Johannesburg department of Geography environmental studies and energy studies, faculty of science, had a holiday programme for the children which took place from July 10 up until July 21.
The holiday programme entailed activities that would educate the children on ecology, habitats, food webs, symbiosis, water auditing, the making of a nest, recycling and all sorts of things that have to do with maintaining a healthy environment.
All these activities help children understand the value of life and how everything is interlinked, whether they are aware of it or not.
With an aim to promote the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, character and spiritual development of young people, EnvironMentorz has figured out a way, so that they may achieve their full potential as responsible citizens to improve society.
Organiser Brynmor Coolman said, “I am an eco-scout, is an after school and holiday Environmental Education and Awareness Programme initiated by EnvironMentorz.
This programme offers fun, adventure and learning to young people who love our earth.
“The programme is based on the origins, uses and purposes of air, water, soil, plants, animals and what effect man has on all these elements.”
EnvironMentorz’ “I am an EcoScout” programme provided an active and creative programme, where young people learnt the basics of our beautiful earth inclusive of how it was created and why it was created.
The programme educated them on how the earth works, how it benefits us as humans and how to protect it.
From this, young people will feel empowered and be willing to eradicate the social ills that plague their surroundings to improve their communities and their quality of life on their own.
The programme encourages children to visit various places with environmental significance.
The team from EnvironMentorz thanks, Igsaan’s Butchery, Economic Butchery, Park Bakery, University of Johannesburg department of Geography environmental studies and energy studies – faculty of science, and various other members of the community.
